Max Allen Bell of Deshler, NE the son of Allen and Edith(Knight)Bell was born July 2, 1930 in Strang, NE. He departed this life Friday, January 9, 2009 at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln, NE at the age of 78 years.

He was baptized March 7, 1943 in the United Methodist Church in Hebron, NE by Pastor Arthur Monkman and confirmed January 27, 1957 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Long Beach, CA by Pastor Walter M. Fehner.

Max attended grade school and high school in Hebron. After high school, he worked at Korff Lumber Co. in Hebron. Max joined the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1956. He was stationed on the USS Passumpsic in California.

Max was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, and the Deshler American Legion.

He married Lula Mae Poppe on December 26, 1951. This union was blessed with the birth of seven children. They lived in California for ten years in various cities. While in California, he graduated from Long Beach City College with an Associate of Arts Degree majoring in welding. He was a gifted welder.

He worked for Kermie Nelson, RRR (Richard Reinke Rafters), John Zucker, and also worked at Reinke Mfg. for several years. He eventually opened his own business, Bell’s Welding, which caught fire in the late 80’s. Max owned the Deshler Drive Inn, which they bought in 1969, and owned until the tornado in 2003. In 1978, they started managing the American Legion Club in Deshler, until it was destroyed in the same tornado of 2003.

Max enjoyed working on race cars with his son Gregory, building model cars, and woodworking. He loved going to car races, watching his son, grandsons, and granddaughters race.
