Today, we celebrate the life of Mavis Lawrence, affectionately known as “Ma Christine” and “Aunt Mae”. Mavis was born on December 31, 1923 in McField District, Westmoreland Jamaica, West Indies. She was one of eleven girls, born to the late Elsie Stewart, and was one of the last 2 surviving sisters, before she was called home on January first.
In her early twenties, Mavis moved and relocated to Kingston where she worked as a housekeeper. She was a hard worker often expressing her famous statement. “hard work never kill anyone”.
In 1986, Mavis migrated to the United States to be with her daughter Patricia and grandchildren. Education was always something Mavis was very big on, and when the opportunity presented itself for her to accomplished her goal, she enrolled in the educational program at Braggs Learning Center to fulfill her dream. She also sought gainful employment as a caretaker in the capacity as a home health aide where she worked for another five more years. She then used this time to help raise and care for her great grandchildren. Mavis other passions were baking and cooking. She made the best bread pudding, toto and banana fritters. Her oxtails, run-down and sorrel was to die for.
Mavis was a woman with deep Christian faith and values. She also felt that she was the better singer and could carry a tune by trying to raise her voice, just so that everyone could hear her. She became a member of the Church of God of Prophecy All Nation, where she attended religiously until her health started to fail. On December 31, 2017, Mavis celebrated her 94th birthday with her children, grand and great grandchildren by her bedside. In her final hours, the family sang, eulogized and prayed as the New Year was ushered in.
Mavis Lawrence leaves to mourn, one surviving sister, Inez who lives in Canada, 2 daughters – Patricia and Angela. 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
