On August 5, 1963, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Maurice Womack, Jr. was born to Maurice Womack, Sr., and Gladys Mae Oliver Womack. He was their only child and his parents dearly loved him. His mother especially doted on him. He was their very special gift from God and the answer to their prayers. A joyful blessing from the birth, Maurice, Jr. excelled in each of his early endeavors and he made his parents proud.

As the son of two very active members of St.

Maurice excelled scholastically and his teachers recognized his aptitude and often awarded such. He was glad to be a product of the Indianapolis Public System, graduating from School #69 and from Broad Ripple High School, in 1981. Having earned an athletic academic scholarship to Ball State University, where he matriculated for two years, Maurice transferred to IUPUI to be closer to home. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in 1986.

Although Maurice excelled in baseball, basketball was his chosen sport from Day 1. He declined the inclement weather and he was attracted to the excitement of the crowds at basketball games and at the IHSAA tournaments at old Hinkle Field House, in particular. Maurice began playing as a young child in the neighborhood parks, recreational centers and continued on teams throughout his primary, secondary and advanced education. As he grew in age, Maurice’s love for the sport grew fonder as  played in over-30, over-40 and over-50 leagues. His injuries may have slowed him down and   reduced his abilities and minutes played, but he never lost his zest for the game and he was eager to say yes when asked to join any team. He collected  numerous trophies which he spread between his parents’ house, his daughter’s shelves and his own home. Aside from participating in his first love, Maurice was a also a Boy Scout. The Scouts held his interest for many years, but during his high school years, basketball had become his passion. He enjoyed golf, and dancing was a favorite hobby, which he and his wife enjoyed together.

His 6’6” stature along with his ability to consistently dress impeccably made him stand out in a crowd. Maurice was easily noticed when he entered. Because he was sought after to model in many fashion shows over the years, Maurice proudly kept his weight down, hair coiffed, and his hands and feet meticulous.

He was an avid reader, always well-versed in sports and current events and a brilliant conversationalist. Endowed with an extensive and well-versed vocabulary, his voice carried, and he spoke emphatically and intelligently.  Maurice enjoyed the camaraderie of people of all ages and from all walks of life. Being of member of The Unique Brothers, he was active from high school until his eternal rest. This brotherhood served as a strong threshold throughout the years by offering support during hard times, fellowship and assistance wherever necessary. Maurice treated all people the same and made it a point to greet all acquaintances by name.

Maurice first entered the workforce in his youth, as a bag boy at Marsh Grocery, and at the Indianapolis Raquetball Club during his college years. After completing his studies, he began applying his talents, charm and charisma to sales, where he was most proficient. Maurice worked at various companies, including Merchandise Warehouse as a sales representative, a telemarketing job for a number of years and at Academy of Publishing, before settling at PDD (Professional Data Dimensions), an information technology firm which later turned Black-owned. Maurice directed their sales team and earned lucrative contracts with some of the Midwest’s most prestigious enterprises, which included Eli Lilly and Company, Cummings Engine and the General Motors Corporation.

Maurice kept his home life private. He was a loving husband to Yvonne, with whom he was joined in Holy Matrimony for 11 loving years. He treasured his mother, and adored each of his daughters. He enjoyed traveling to see family and truly relished the times spent at Womack  Family Reunions.

Maurice peacefully answered The Lord’s Call on February 25, 2021, with his devoted wife, Yvonne, at his side, together at their home. He leaves fond memories with his daughters, C.
