Maurice E. Schmitz, a lifelong resident of Fowler, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on November 30, 2023. He was 82 years old.Maurice was born at home in St. Johns, Michigan on June 1, 1941, the youngest of twelve children born to Peter and Mary Catherine (Feldpausch) Schmitz. He attended Fowler High School and proudly served in the United States Army. In 1969, he met the young Darlene Wirth while playing pool, and after a brief courtship the couple married on August 22, 1970 and made their home in Fowler. For over forty five years he worked as a skilled tradesman with General Motors, and owned his own farm.Maurice was an expert at fixing anything that came his way, a skill he honed through years of tinkering and problem-solving. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for farming and tractors. He relished the tranquility of being outside and the fulfillment derived from hard work. He shared his love of the out-of-doors by taking his family on camping trips all around Michigan. He enjoyed life’s simplest pleasures: playing games or cards with his grandchildren, taking rides in the golf cart, or taking a Sunday drive. Maurice was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and a longtime member of the Fowler VFW. He was a devoted family man, known for his dry sense of humor and hardworking, steadfast nature. Maurice, often stubborn and set in his ways, was always driven by love and dedication. He was a loyal and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend and will be missed by many.He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty three years, Darlene Schmitz; his children, Michelle Carroll, Doug (Cindy) Schmitz, Dan (Natalie) Schmitz, Lisa (Nick) Hensel; dear grandchildren, Rachel Carroll, Nolan, Shannon and Taryn Schmitz, Emma, Allison, Bailey Schmitz, Garrett Johnson, Kinley and Brycen Hensel; sister, Eunice (Clare) Pung; sisters-in-law, Marcia (the late Hilary) Schmitz, Fay (the late Richard) Schmitz and Marcia (the late Peter) Schmitz; in-laws, Diane (Larry) Kohagen, Donna Schafer and Daria (Joe) Thelen, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Catherine Schmitz and siblings, Freda (Ed) Bauer, Stella (Tom) Kinney, Agnes (Tom) Faivor, Stanley (Pat) Schmitz, Donald (Mary Lou) Schmitz, Richard Schmitz, Justin (Sharon) Schmitz, Eletha Schmitz, Peter Schmitz and Hilary Schmitz.
