Maureen Elizabeth (nee Mitchell) Wilson, 89, of O’Fallon, Illinois, passed away on August 10, 2013. Maureen was born in Delia, Kansas on February 2, 1924, and grew up on a Kansas farm nearby. As the wife of an Air Force officer, she and her family were stationed at Scott Air Force Base in 1954 where she promptly settled in to local life in O’Fallon. She was employed for 22 years at O’Fallon Township High School, and often spoke fondly of the students she served.
She was active early on with the First United Methodist Church, and helped get the church moved to its present location. She was a member of the Historical Society of O’Fallon, the Senior Citizens Club of O’Fallon, and was a former member of the O’Fallon Women’s Club. Maureen had many hobbies and interests through her years, including sewing, quilting and ceramics, but her big passions were politics, card-playing, and the St. Louis Cardinals. She was actively involved with the St. Clair County Republican Party in the 70’s and 80’s, and attended the Republican National Convention as an alternate delegate in 1984. She was an avid bridge player in private clubs, and served for a time as the director of the Collinsville Thursday Afternoon Club.
Maureen was preceded in death by her parents, Earl Mitchell and Clara Mitchell, brothers, William Mitchell and Jack Mitchell, and son Robert Preston Wilson. Maureen is survived by children Barbara Jeanne Cox of O’Fallon, Brenda Wilson (Diwan Bhathal) of Bethesda, Md, and Brian Wilson of O’Fallon; daughter-in-law Kathy Wilson of Sacramento, Ca; grandson Preston Wilson and his fiance Melissa Robinson; great-grandchildren Erika, Alyssa, and Jenna; and Melissa’s children, Patrick and Ryan.
