In 1956 Ernie was hired in the Aircraft Engine Department of General Electric, and the family moved to Cincinnati, OH. Louise worked as the personal secretary to the Dean of the Evening College at Xavier University, where she also attended classes.

In 1968, they moved to Albuquerque, NM, where she and her husband bought and managed the La Mesa Motel until Ernest retired from General Electric. It was during this time they adopted their third son, Dana M. Gilmer.
