Mattie Lou Spencer, also known as Bipsie or “Bip” to her close family, was born in Eutaw, Alabama on February 8, 1932 to the late Berry Spencer and Mattie Olivia Thomas. Mattie quietly slipped into eternal rest on August 9, 2017.
Mattie attended school in Tuscaloosa Alabama , graduating from Druid High School in 1956. Mattie’s Christian life began in Tuscaloosa Alabama where she worshiped at Beulah Baptist Church also was baptized there and she served on the choir and usher board .
Mattie had the aspirations to work for a bank in Alabama but due to her race she was unable to. Mattie worked as a house keeper for the owners of Hardin Bakery located in Alabama . Mattie later decided in order for her to make a better living situation for herself and family she would sacrifice and moved to New York where she found work as a maid for the Kennedy International hotel for a few years, soon after Mattie was able to secure a job at the Chemical Bank where she retired after 25 years as a bank reconciler .Mattie’s work ethic was a model for all to emulate ,
Mattie was a kind hearted person, who will always be loved by her friends and family. Mattie loved to cook and entertain, perhaps in a different time she would have been known as a socialite. Mattie will always be remembered for her unconditional love for family and friends, her strong values and respect for others.
