Matthew E. Smith-Farrell of Summit, NJ (formerly of Severna Park, Maryland) entered eternal life on April 3, 2016.

Matthew’s Spirit lives on in his three strong, kind, vibrant daughters, Alana Marie (10), Caileigh Rose (5) and Aveleen (“Ava”) Liliana (5). His Love is carried forever forward by his best friend of 27 years (wife for almost 17), Joanne Smith-Farrell (formerly Joanne Farrell of Laurel, Maryland). His Memory is cherished by his father, Brendan Smith of Baltimore, and by his brothers Brian Smith and Mark Smith. He is reunited with his devoted mother, Nan Smith (formerly Judge), of Baltimore, who left this world unexpectedly in November of 2015. His Life is celebrated by his many nieces, nephews, in-laws, godchildren, friends and colleagues – too numerous to list but each deeply valued. To this day, his service dog, Aslan, faithfully maintains vigil at the back window of the family’s new home in Summit, NJ.

Matthew’s interests and passions were deep and wide. He was an enthusiastic athlete (soccer, swimming, marathon running), an avid writer (poetry and prose), and a highly appreciative patron of music, theater, and the arts.

Matthew successfully fought glioblastoma multiforme (brain cancer) for four years. In the final stages of his illness, on a day when he said little else, Matthew suddenly opened his eyes wide and pronounced with complete clarity “There is such a surfeit of beauty in the world. Maybe that’s the point. Maybe that’s been the point all along.” He then fell back asleep. Matthew would have loved for each person who wishes to celebrate his life would to do so in a way that is uniquely theirs, and that honors a moment of beauty in his memory.
