Obituary of Matthew R. McConnell
Age 85, of St. Paul, MN died peacefully at home on January 28, 2017 after a long illness. Born April 4, 1931 to Catherine and Sam McConnell in Rochester, MN, the youngest of 9 siblings. He was preceded in death by first wife, Rita; his parents; brothers, Jerome, Lawrence, Nic, Jean, and Fabian. Survived by his beloved wife, Betty; children, Ben, Steve (Mette), and Christina; stepsons, Steve (Linda) and Tim (Cindy) Pelton; 4 grandchildren; 7 step grandchildren; and 13 step great-grandchildren. Also survived by brother, Sylvester; sisters, Connie (Paul) Walsh and Trudy Nelson; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He graduated from St. Mary’s University and earned his Master’s degree at the University of Minnesota in 1966. Matt retired in 1993 after a 27- year career teaching English and the Humanities at Rochester Community College. In 2009, he published a collection of poems and stories, titled Does The Sky Go On Forever? He also directed at the Edyth Bush Theatre in St. Paul and acted in numerous productions at the Rochester Civic Theatre. Matt was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and also enjoyed the Vikings, Lynx, and Gophers.
