Mr. Matthew J. “Big Matt” Mulcahey, 42, of Elkhart, passed away at his home at 6:20 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, following an extended illness.
He was born in Elkhart on June 8, 1970, to the late Joseph F. and Sharon K. (Sexton) Mulcahey Heckaman.
Surviving are his sons Matthew J. Mulcahey II and Michael J. Mulcahey, as well as their mother, Marla Laycoax, all of Elkhart; daughter Elizabeth K. “Lizzie” Mulcahey, and her mother Jenifer L. Rupnow, both of Elkhart; brothers Joseph F. Mulcahey Jr. and John P. Mulcahey Sr., both of Elkhart; sisters Laurie A. (Tim) Underwood of Gainsville, Texas, and Mary E. Mulcahey of Kalamazoo, Mich.; stepfather Jeffry A. Heckaman of Elkhart; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Big Matt was an avid Harley-Davidson enthusiast who loved the outdoors. He enjoyed long rides on his bike, walking along wilderness trails and fishing. He was employed for several years with the city of Elkhart’s water and traffic departments. Matt will be best remembered for his ever-present sense of humor and his ability to make anyone and everyone laugh.
