Matthew was born on September 20, 1986 in Galesburg, the son of Mark and Jerry Helms McLaughlin. Surviving Matthew are his parents of Galesburg; a brother, Mark (Jana) of Galesburg; and a niece and nephew Addysen and Nathan McLaughlin both of Galesburg. Also surviving are his maternal grandfather and step grandmother Don (Barbara) Helms of Galesburg; and maternal great grandmother, Geneva Benedict of Galesburg. Matthew was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Helen McLaughlin; maternal grandmother, Dona Helms; and maternal great grandfather, Clair Benedict.
Matthew worked as a detailer at Yemm Chevrolet. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
