MARY VIRGINIA MEADOW PARR
Born in Estill, Mississippi on July 22, 1917 to Albert Sloane and Virginia Adeline Meadow, Mary Virginia Parr died on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at the age of 97.After her father’s death in 1928, the family moved to South Texas, farming in the West Sinton community in San Patricio County. Graduating from Sinton High School in 1934, Mary Virginia attended Mary Hardin Baylor College for Women for two years, earning her sophomore certificate to teach at the age of 18.She returned to her home school at West Sinton where she taught English and Spanish and coached girls’ basketball and tennis. Continuing her education during summers at the University of Mississippi and Texas College of Arts and Industries, she graduated with a Master’s Degree with a dual major in English and Spanish.She married W. Robert Parr of Robstown on November 26, 1940—a marriage that lasted over 70 years until his death in 2011.During World War II, she taught school, managed her husband’s farm, and raised her young son until Robert’s return in 1945. She helped her husband establish Parr Block Company in Corpus Christi, which operated for 40 years. Mrs. Parr intermittently taught school in Robstown and was fully-involved in community activities. She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Robstown and a founding member of the Robstown Garden Club.She will be remembered as a strong, independent woman who cared deeply for others and had tremendous energy, courage, and resolve.She is survived by sons, Robert Parr and wife Dilek of Boerne, Texas, by Earl Parr of Corpus Christi, and by daughter, Sylvia Parr Harding of Hilltop Lakes, Texas; 7 grandchildren: Aysel Heckel, Tesha Solomon, Robbie Parr, Shelia Cann, Jeremy Parr, Alyne Harding, Nikki Parr; 9 great-grandchildren: Ayse, Sayan, and Senay Heckel, Alev Parr, Liam Parr, Joshua Parr, Evan Parr, Violet Cann, Stella Cann, Virginia Lorelei Harding, and Richard Bryce Grant III.
