Mary Margaret (McGuire) Henkhaus, 97, of Jacksonville, IL died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021, at Heritage Health in Jacksonville.

She was born January 5, 1924, in Carrollton, the daughter of Louis and Clara Cecilia Gress McGuire. She married Robert J. “Bob” Henkhaus on Oct. 6, 1951, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, and he preceded her in death on August 3, 2003. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers Edgar, Vernon, Philip, and Donnie, and is survived by sisters Eileen and Donna and brother Clarence.

She is also survived by six children: Beverly K. Hall of AZ, Robert V. Henkhaus (wife, Coraine) of WA, Deborah J. Weisshappel (husband, Bob) of IL, Richard A. Henkhaus (wife, Jenny) of AZ, Joseph J. Henkhaus (wife, Shelly) of CA, and John D. Henkhaus (wife, Patti) of CA; 15 grandchildren ranging in age from 19-39; and 3 young great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Henkhaus was a 1941 graduate of St. John’s Catholic High School in Carrollton. She had worked for Standard Oil in Wood River and spent some time at Olin Industries manufacturing ammunition in support of the War, before moving to Jacksonville in 1966. After raising her children, she worked for years at Bread of Love in Jacksonville. She was an active and proud member of Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, and she and Bob were proud to have sent their six children to Routt Catholic High School. She was also a member of the Altar & Rosary Society at Our Saviour for some time. Mary was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan, a political TV enthusiast, and astute at conversation, and her family knew her as an accomplished adventurous cook in her kitchen.
