Mary Margaret Brundige, 89, of New Windsor, MD, died Sunday after a short illness. She was the daughter of the late Roland Crist Caley and Ida Shelby Graves. She grew up near Columbus, Ohio where she had an adventurous childhood. She wanted to be a journalist or a fashion designer, but all that changed when she met her future husband. They fell in love and eloped when they were 17.
She raised 9 of her own children and was a mother to many neighborhood kids. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was so proud of them. She loved to quilt, read books and work the New York Times crossword puzzles. She traveled around the country doing genealogy research. She was descended from Charlemagne and her ancestors Moses Shelby and John Sladyen fought in the Revolutionary War. She committed her life to Christ in 1962 and was quick to help anybody in need, even if she didn’t have enough for herself. For many years she has supported the missionary work of Chris & Beth Steiner, through the Word of Life ministries. She was a friend to anyone she met.
She is survived by all 9 of her children, Susan (Tom) Huber, Shelby (Harry) Justice, Shannon Williams (Hilton), Stacy (Buck) Devane, Jim (Sharon) Brundige, Ed (Kim) Brundige, Sally (Dan) Zimmerman, Bob (Diane) Brundige, & John Brundige; one foster child Danny Lever; 16 grandchildren Alicia (Matt) Coles, Allyson Padgett, Bob (Melanie) Brundige, Jr., Courtney Brundige, David Johnson, Holly (Josh) Epps, Jacob (Debra) Zimmerman, Jason Halbert, Jimmy (Sarah) Brundige, Joshua Brundige, Lauren (Kyle) Rockholt, Michael Brundige, Ryan (Bobbi Jo) Justice, Sarah (Michael) Castrillon, Skye-Lynn Brundige and Tyler (Jennifer) Zimmerman; and 18 great grandchildren, Andrew, Atreyu, Brocklyn, Caley, Carson, Connor, Eliza, Emma, Grace, Halo, Hunter, Juliette, Kaitlyn, Kylie, Mckenzie, Roland, Scarlette, Silas.
She was predeceased by her husband James, her brother Fred, her son-in-law Dan Zimmerman and her great grandson Caleb.
A celebration of her life is planned in the near future.
