Mary Madeline Carr, 89, of Galesburg, died on Friday, June 10, 2016, 5:50 PM, at Heartland Healthcare Center, Galesburg.
Madeline was born March 25, 1927 in Manchester, England. She was the daughter of Thomas Joseph, Sr. and Winifred Josephine Hoben Carr.
Madeline is survived by many loving nieces and nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Thomas Joseph Carr, Jr., Leo Bernard Carr, James Edward Carr, Francis Michael Carr, Norman Michael Carr, Patrick Eugene Carr; and a sister, Bernadine Ann Gardner.
Madeline graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy, Galesburg. She became a certified nurse’s aide during the war in 1943 with the American Red Cross. She attended St. Vincent de Paul Business College and she also attended Loyola University Business College, Chicago. She worked in Chicago as a secretary to IBM Corporation for 20 years.
Madeline was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, St. Patrick’s Altar and Rosary Society, American Legion of Mary, Women’s Order of Catholic Foresters, and Chicago Catholic Women’s Professional Club. She also did volunteer work at the Galesburg Cottage Thrift Store.
Madeline was an accomplished violinist and played in the Chicago Civic Opera House Orchestra and Outside Shell Theatre. She learned to fly a Cessna airplane 150- dual control and sailed the high seas in Lake Michigan in 1949-1950.
Madeline had a fast and interesting life. Ever loyal, caring, and giving, Madeline was the family’s guardian angel who quietly took care of them without even having to be asked. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
