Mary Modeshefsky, 81, of Toms River passed away suddenly on Friday April 2, 2021 in her home. Born in the High Bridge section of the Bronx in 1939, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Margaret (O’Connor) Caverly.  She was married to the late Joseph Modeshefsky with whom she enjoyed 28 years of marriage before his passing in 1997.

Mary worked as a typist for Western Electric in NYC. She enjoyed riding her father’s subway train to work daily. She and Joe lived in Union, NJ for years where Joe worked as a Bayonne Firefighter. She was a tireless caregiver for her mother as she battled Alzheimer’s disease, for her father as his health declined, and later for her husband as he battled lung cancer. This made her appreciate the value of hospice and led her to volunteer for hospice in Toms River for many years. She was a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in Toms River.

Personal: Mary was a friend to everyone she met and was always available to talk on the phone. For years she enjoyed ceramics and her works will continue to bring joy to family and friends. She loved to travel with Joe and then with friends later in life. Some of her favorite pastimes were going out to dinner and to the movies. She enjoyed all the activities in Holiday City especially bingo and playing bocce (Team Captain). She was a loving sister to her “Brother” Andrew, and she was an adored Aunt. Three generations of nephews and nieces loved their Aunt Mary and enjoyed visits with her.

Survivors:  She is survived by her loving family.  Four nephews, Andy and wife Sandy of Delray Beach, FL, Mike and wife Sue of Macungie, PA, Ed and wife Joni of Parker, CO, and Tom and wife Michelle of Macungie, PA; sister-in-law Carolyn Modeshefsky of Bayonne, NJ; and many great-nephews and great-nieces.  In addition to her parents and loving husband Joe, she was preceded in death by her brother Andrew Caverly, Sister-in-law Patricia Caverly, and a niece Cheryl Caverly.
