Mary Louise Sommers, 93, of Indianapolis, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2017 in Greenwood, after suffering a stroke. She was born on December 22, 1923, in Batesville, Indiana, to her parents, Peter James and Anne (Bultman) Sommers.

She retired from Regans Rye Bakery in the 70’s and retired again from Barrett Industries in the 90’s, she served as an accountant, for both companies. She enjoyed playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, traveling, and major league baseball, especially the Cubs. The highlight of her life, was when she and her girlfriends would meet the soldiers, as they arrived, at the train station, downtown. Then the girls would go to the “USO” and serve the soldiers snacks and dance long into the night with them.

Mary was a born-again Christian, you could see it expressed through her loving and compassionate ways. She was always trying to be an encourager to others. She set a great example to the younger generation; she proved that never driving a vehicle and always walking or riding public transportation, to get to her desired destination, never kept her from doing what she needed or wanted to do. I believe, without a doubt, that her longevity was greatly affected and enhanced by her walking everywhere. Mary also kept her mind sharp and her spirits high by her daily reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards, and spending time with her family and friends. We can’t leave out the fact that she ate her “banana” daily, I am sure that played an important role as well.

Though she never married and subsequently, had no biological children, she was blessed to have been surrounded by nieces and nephews that loved her like a mother and grandmother. Mary would often babysit and care for many of them, as they grew up. They made sure that she was always cared for and remembered. Mary loved spending holidays and attending special outings with her family.

Mary is survived by her nephew, Jim C. (Becky) Summers of Greenwood, her niece-in-law, Martha Craig Sommers, great nieces and nephews, and several great-great nephews – all of whom, she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother James P. Sommers; two nieces, Rita Vandiver Sommers and Diane Butler Sommers; and a nephew, Stephen Sommers.
