Mary Lillian Pike Johnson of Newnan left this life gently on November 1, 2007 at her residence. A native of Newnan, she was born March 1, 1917, the daughter of the late Harvey Coley Pike, Sr., and Uris Camp Pike. Also preceding her in death was her brother, Harvey Coley Pike, Jr. Mary Lillian was quite the progressive woman for her era and spent her working career involved in the family business, Pike Transfer Company, and was secretary and treasurer for the company. Ever mindful of the company’s bottom line, she would waste none of the company resources and reminded those in the office that the adding machine tape had two sides and both should be used. Throughout her very active life, she was deeply involved in the life of the community.

She was a charter member of The Pilot Club of Newnan and of the Newnan Coweta Art Association. Other activities involved the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society. Mary Lillian was a devoted member of Newnan First United Methodist Church and was active in many of its ministries and had served as a member of the administrative board. In 1992, Mary Lillian’s life made another interesting turn as she renewed an old acquaintance with W. H. “Buck” Johnson. Following the death of his wife, he had returned to Newnan. They married and were constant companions until his death in 2004.

Surviving Mrs. Johnson is her brother, Sanford C. Pike and his wife Betty Jane of Newnan; nieces, Colleen Pike Saunders and her husband Grady of Tullahoma, TN and their son Grady Pike Saunders and his wife Sonia. Their children are Lila and Emeri. Also surviving is another niece, Pamela Pike Sullivan and her husband William T. “Bud” Sullivan and their children Camp and Cathryn.
