Mary Katherine (Betts) Surguine, 86, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2016, in Franklin, Indiana. She was born in August 22, 1929, in Hope, Arkansas to her parents Harvey Betts and Mildred (Jones) Allen.
Mary Kay was a voice major at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Mary Kay had a beautiful soprano voice; she played lead roles in a number of popular musicals at the community theater, in Hinsdale, Illinois.
She was a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, and had a keen interest in genealogy, spending hours online tracing her ancestry back hundreds of years. Mary Kay moved to the Franklin United Methodist Community, in 2013, from Bella Vista, Arkansas, where she had lived since 1993.
She is survived by her three children: Melissa Surguine-Smith of Charlottesville, VA., Robin (Norman) Surguine Ross of Chicago, IL., and Scott (Ruth) Surguine of Collierville, TN; four grandchildren: Parker Ross of Indianapolis, Ariel (Steve) Hartman of Ponte Vedra, FL, Emily Smith of Charlottesville, VA, and Lauren Smith of Oklahoma City; and one great-grandson: Louis Hartman.
Mary Kay was preceded in death by her husband, Frank McCormick Surguine, her parents, Harvey Betts and Mildred Allen, and her step-father, Isador Austin Allen.
