Mary Jo (Schuh) Powers, 86, of Cromwell, wife of Joseph Thomas Powers for 54 years, passed away on Monday, February 8th at her home while fighting a dignified battle with cancer. Born in Syracuse, NY on January 1, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Charlotte (Barton) Schuh. Mary Jo became a registered nurse in 1944 serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Returning home in 1948, she worked for Hartford Hospital until returning to duty, serving during the Korean Conflict and retiring as a Lieutenant. Upon returning home, she started her family and when her children got older she returned to nursing retiring in 1986. Mary Jo was a member of the American Legion in Cromwell. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Thomas J. Powers and his wife, Rose, of Cape Coral, FL and Mark T. Powers and his wife, Heather of West Yarmouth, MA; two daughters, Nancy Miller and her husband, Bob, of Rochester, NH and Lynne Cook and her husband, Charlie of Sinking Springs, PA; seven grandchildren and several loving nieces and nephews.
