She passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017 at the Countryside Home in Madison.
Mary Janice was born February 20, 1936 in Madison County, Nebraska to her parents Sherman and Ursula (Ziegler) Johnson. She was baptized at her grandmother’s house in Newman Grove and confirmed at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Stanton. Jan attended grade school in Antelope, Madison and Stanton counties. She graduated from Stanton High School in 1953.
Jan married Marlowe “Mike” H. Kohl on June 30, 1954 in Fremont, Nebraska. The couple raised their family in Madison. She worked as a dispatcher for the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. After retirement, she continued to work at Nebraska Title and Escrow and also at Food Pride up until last year. Jan was a retired member of the Madison Fire and Rescue.
Her hobbies included serving as a Hunter Safety Instructor, a 4-H leader, a seamstress, and an avid bowler for greater than twenty years. She had a great fondness for animals especially horses and dogs.
Jan was extremely proud of all her grandchildren, they brought immense joy to her world. She was always cheering on the sidelines and when she was able she was in the stands at their sports events.
She is survived by her children Steve, Mary (Jim) Jetensky, Mitch (Kathy) Kohl, and Sheila (Tony) Kampa, six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and four step grandchildren, sisters Judy (George) Godel, Nancy (Bob) Scott, and Linda (Vaughn) Stiles and sister-in-law Marge Mummert.
Jan was preceded in death by her husband Mike, infant brother John, brothers Sherman (Faith Ann) and Lawrence “Larry” (Helen), three nephews, a niece, daughter-in-law Cathy Kohl and brother-in-law Jerry Kohl.
