Mary Jane “Pete” Matthews, 78 of Centralia passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at Gallatin Manor in Ridgway, Illinois. She was born on April 12, 1940, in Missouri, the daughter of Oscar Roux and Sofia (Hamburg) Roux.
She married Norman E. Matthews, Sr. on October 10, 1957.
In addition to Norman E. Matthews, Sr. and special friend Dottie Garren of Odin, she is also survived by a daughter, Robbyin Etheridge and husband Randy of Odin; seven grandchildren: Brannon Etheridge and wife Sandra, Brent “Ty” Etheridge, Chelsey Davis and husband Ben, Travis Etheridge and wife Anica, Brooke Helsing and husband Louis, Justin Matthews and fiancè Dayna, and Shae Matthews and friend Tonya; thirteen great-grandchildren: Coralynn Etheridge, Bryler and Holden Etheridge, Blake Tomes, Brianna Massaro, Braxton Davis, Henry, and Evelyn Etheridge, Nevaeh and Olivia Helsing, Mairin Matthews, Maddox, and Greyson Matthews; two sisters: Carolyn “Corky” Alcorn and Jacqueline “Jackie” Eller and husband Bob; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son: Norman E. “Butch” Matthews, Jr., eight sisters, and four brothers. “Pete” worked at St. Mary’s Hospital and then at Warren G. Murray Center for many years. She will always be remembered as a loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who always put others’ needs before her own.
