Mary Jane Mess, 98, of Ottawa, died Thursday morning, January 10, 2013, at the Ottawa Pavilion.
Mary Jane was born on May 17, 1914, in Winnetka, Illinois, to Harry Miltz and Mary (Richards) Mess. She was a graduate of Northwestern University, and retired in 1975 from Ottawa Township High School where she served as the Head of the Language Department.
She served in that capacity from 1943 until her retirement. Prior to 1943, she taught at Sandwich High School for seven years. Mary Jane was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ottawa, Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, American Association of University Women, NEA, and Phi Beta Kappa. She also served as a hospice volunteer for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Pallbearers will be Michael Clinch, John Bean, Richard Fricke, Earl Gerding, William Buckingham and Wes Faris.
