Mary Jane Aplington, 86, of 1503 Sunset Dr., Peru, died at 8:20 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 2007, at Illinois Valley Community Hospital, Peru. She was born July 31, 1920 in Peru to Andrew and Helen (Hardebeck) Hebel. She was a graduate of Rosary College in River Forest with a Bachelors Degree in Library Science. She married Dr. James B. Aplington on October 21, 1943 in Chicago. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Patricks Church, the Ladies of St. Patricks, a volunteer for the American Red Cross for many years, and was a volunteer for Peru Public Library, Meals of Wheels, and committees and chairmanships at the church. She helped to start St. Patricks Bingo and served as a member of the original committee. She was a very active member of Deer Park Country Club, an avid golfer, and had scored a hole-in-one. She was an avid bridge player, avid sportsman, and avid knitter who made and donated many afghans to fund raising events. She is survived by her husband: Dr. James Aplington of Peru; 4 daughters, Becky (Gary) Thorsen of Rockford, Nancy (James) Broedlow of Streator, Joanna Haney of Portland, Oregon, and Christine (Joel) Franks of Fort Bragg, California; 1 son, William (Susan) Aplington of Chicago; 15 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Helen Prendergast of Oglesby, Jean (Donald) Killelea of McAllen, Texas, and Nancy Schaenzer of Davison, Michigan; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her parents; 1 grandson, Ryan Aplington; and 5 brothers. Memorials may be directed to the Illinois Right to Life, or the donors choice.
