Mary Sponberg, 82, Ridgefield Resident Mary Teresa (Halloran) Sponberg died peacefully at Wilton Meadows Health Care Center on Friday morning, August 10, 2012. She was 82. Mrs. Sponberg was the first of three children born to Timothy Martin and Rose Teresa Halloran; Irish immigrants who met and married in the United States. Mary was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 17, 1929. A second daughter, Ann, was born three years later. Ann died from pneumonia at the age of 18. Mary, who had been blind since birth, attended public schools in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating from Bushwick High School, she entered a Carmelite order to try her vocation. Two years later, Mary left religious life and went to work at the Industrial Home for the Blind in Brooklyn, NY, where she met her future husband, Conrad Sponberg. Mary was a devoted wife to Conrad for 45 years, until his death in 1998. The Sponbergs moved to Ridgefield in 1992. Mary lived at Ballard Green until moving to Prospect Ridge Congregate Housing in 2009. She had spent the last year at Wilton Meadows due to failed health. With the help of family and friends, Mary was active in town and in St. Mary’s Parish.
