Mary Agnes Evans ( Scarbrough) age 74, a longtime resident of Silver City, passed peacefully away at her home on Sundown Trail in the Burro Mountains, near Silver City on July 18th, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.

Mary was the former owner and operator of the “Homestead”( Adult Residential Home”) and cared for her patients with thoughtful, tender loving care, determined to provide them a “loving home like atmosphere,” treating them as she would her own family. Mary was very much loved and respected by all who knew her. Her kindness was extended to all.

In Mary’s earlier years she worked as a “Lookout” ( Firefly) for the US Forest Service In Oregon, as well for the Gila National Forest at Signal Peak. Mary was known for her rapid response while on the tower and exceptional ability for detecting fires. Mary loved to camp and swim near her little rustic cabin in the mountains in Oregon. She loved nature and the quietness and the peace that resided there. Mary loved to cook and was famous among family and friends for her Dutch oven biscuits and beans. She loved to can from her garden and gather berries for her jams and jellies.

The most important part of her life was her precious family and Grand Children. Mary was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her loving attitude will be greatly missed and was cherished by all.

Born on October 25th 1938, at Hot Springs New Mexico ( Truth or Consequences) to Travis and Lilly Thompson – Scarbrough, Mary had seven brothers and one sister. Four brothers have preceded her in death, as well as her husband, John Carl Evans, her parents, Travis and Lilly and loving grandson, Raymond P. Evans.
