Mary E. Cornett White was born on February 21, 1929, in Hazard, Kentucky, daughter of Janie and Charlie Cornett. She was the third of ten children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill White; sons, Tony and John; her parents; sisters, Sue, Pearl, and Myrtle, and brothers, Willie B, Jack, Charles and Warren.
Mary attended school at Town Mountain Elementary, (a one-room schoolhouse). She later attended and graduated from Lincoln Ridge Institute, a historically renowned and prominent boarding school for African American children. She held several offices in the Lincoln Institute Alumni Association, which today raises money for the current school’s programs and scholarships.
