Mary Donovan Spellman, 86, entered eternal life on September 20, 2013. Born in Norwich on December 2, 1926 to the late Thomas and Amelia (Riordan) Donovan, she attended St. Patrick Cathedral School and the Norwich Free Academy. She was a graduate of the Hospital of St. Raphael School of Nursing in New Haven, served in the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps during World War II and received her certification in Public Health from Simmons College in Boston. Mary earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Connecticut State College in 1975.
She worked as a public health nurse and later taught for many years at St. Patrick Cathedral School in Norwich, retiring in 1991.
On June 28, 1958 in St. Patrick Cathedral, she was united in marriage to Nicholas J. Spellman, Jr. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, by her twin sister, Madeline Donovan and brothers Thomas Donovan and John Donovan. She is survived by her sons, Nicholas T. Spellman, his wife, Marie, and son, Nicholas A. of Wilbraham, MA, and Charles D. Spellman, wife, Michele, son, Charles, Jr., and daughter, Victoria, of Rocky Hill, CT; and several other nieces and nephews.
