Shallotte, North Carolina ? It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Royal Council Carpenter announce her passing. She died peacefully on June 1, 2007 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Mrs. Carpenter was born in Sikeston, Missouri on May 26, 1920 to the late Floyd and Flora Morrison Royal.

She graduated from Sikeston High School in 1937. She moved to Anderson, Indiana in 1946 and began a 30 year career at Delco Remy Division of General Motors, retiring in 1976. While in Anderson, before moving to Charlotte, North Carolina and then to Sunset Beach, North Carolina, she was actively involved in the Wapehani Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association ABWA and was honored as Woman of the Year in 1969.

She was a member of the Ovid Chapter of Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron in 1975-76 and again in 1991-92, a member of the Indiana Zeta Chapter of Phi Sigma Alpha Sorority, a member of the Delco Remy Chorus, and a volunteer at St. John?s Health System. She enjoyed meeting with the Delco Remy Retirees Breakfast Club, reading, calligraphy, knitting, crocheting, genealogy research, travel, and most of all, studying the Bible.

She was also a former member of Whetstone United Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd S. Council and her second husband, J. George Carpenter and two brothers, Charles Royal of Mauldin, Missouri and Lyman Royal of Coventry, Rhode Island.

Mary will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Janis Starks of Sunset Beach, North Carolina, Katie Mike Reilly of Indianapolis, Indiana, Setpson, Mike Penny Carpenter of Frankton, Indiana, one grandchild, Dana Dan Dunbar of Waynetown, Indiana, step-grandchildren, Scott Carpenter of Leander, Texas and April Chris Blessing of Lapel, Indiana.

She is also survived by three great grandchildren, four step great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
