Mary Cecilia (Sloan) Pino passed away Thursday Aug. 16, 2018 at her home at Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, Maryland. She was 98.

Born Nov. 22, 1919 in the farm town of Morrisonville, Illinois, she was one of 11 children of George and Mary Sloan.

Recruited to work for the federal government during World War II, Mary moved to Washington, D.C. Her career included posts with the Department of Labor, Department of Agriculture and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

She met her husband, the late Joseph Pino, at a Big Band dance – a pastime the couple enjoyed together for decades to come. Mary and Joe raised their four children in Silver Spring and Calverton, Maryland, where they lived until moving to Ellicott City in retirement.

Mary’s faith was a guiding principle in her life. She was a longtime member of her community parishes, including St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Beltsville, Maryland; Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Ellicott City; and Our Lady of the Angels in Catonsville.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Rita Ann and Thomas Surface, of Columbia, Maryland, Jeanne Marie and William Patrick of Pasadena, Maryland, Daniel Edward and Tracy Pino of Ellicott City and William Bruce and Suzanne Pino of Ellicott City; 12 grandchildren, Camille Timmerman, Jennifer Broadwater, Gregory Surface, Aaron Patrick, Michael Patrick, Kristin Patrick, Matthew Pino, Ryan Pino, Kylie Pino, Brett Pino, Julia Pino and Sean Pino; and five great-grandchildren, Keara and Grant Timmerman, Danielle and William Broadwater, and Thomas Surface II. She also is survived by siblings Rita Mae Sloan of Morrisonville, Illinois; Martha Beeler of Raymond, Illinois; William Sloan of Hillsboro, Illinois; John Sloan of Taylorville, Illinois; James Sloan of Danville, Illinois; Roseann Quinn of New York; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
