Mary Anne Jones Burke, a long time resident of Marianna, Florida passed away Sunday evening, April 25, at a local nursing home. Mary Anne was born December 20, 1927 in New York to Fredrick Lamar Jones and Bess Miller Jones. She moved to Booneville, MS with her mother and younger brother at the age of 2, shortly after her father’s death. After graduating from high school in 1945, she attended Ward Belmont College for 2 years and then transferred to the University of Alabama where she majored in speech therapy. She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and an avid Alabama football fan. It was at the University that she met her husband and love of her life, Henry B. Burke, Jr. Mary Anne and Henry married in July of 1950 and moved to Henry’s hometown of Marianna. Mary Anne quickly became very active in the community sharing her many gifts and talents in the Junior Women’s Club, Garden Club, Girl Scouts and United Methodist Women. She began her career in speech therapy in the early 60’s working in the public school system as one of the first speech therapist in Jackson County. She traveled from school to school setting up her classroom often in a closet or partitioned part of a hallway.
