Salem Mary Smith Bailey Newlon Mary Newlon, 101, departed this life January 21, 2011 at her home in Sardis, WV, following a brief illness. She was born May 17, 1909 to the late George E. Smith and Ida May Griffin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harvey Bailey; her second husband, Norval Newlon; her sister Marcella Hustead Kuhn, and brothers, James and Maynard Smith. She is survived by her youngest brother, Robert M. Smith of Spring Hill, FL. Mary is survived by two children and two stepchildren; Howard Bailey of Sardis, WV and daughter Mary D. Minigh and husband Steve of Gregory Run;stepdaughter Joy Adams and husband Homer of Anmoore, WV; stepdaughter Melody Anthony and husband, Spencer of Oklahoma City, OK.; and son-in-law Jack Lynch. Sadly, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Anna May Freeland and Martha Lynch. She has fifteen grandchildren, Maribeth Freeland Lantz, David Freeland, Mark Lynch, Kimberly Lynch, Duane Adams, Dale Adams, Deanna Adams, Patricia Bailey Swisher, Elizabeth Bailey, Amanda Bailey, Scott Minigh, Jason Minigh, Robin Tackett, Kerrie Cook, and Michael Maxwell. Twenty five great-grandchildren, fifteen great-great grandchildren and a special niece Dee Cress and husband, Dick in Spring Hill, FL, who thought of her as a mother; and close friend Rebecca Knight who became a part of her family. Mary graduated from Sardis High School in 1928. She was a homemaker and always took care of family members starting at the age of 12 with her invalid grandmother. She continued caring for family members throughout her life in her home and started working out of the home at age 71 and continued to age 89 taking care of the elderly with most people being much younger than she. She had a heart of gold and always put others first in every aspect of life.
