Sue Ann Van Winkle, 70, of Elkhart, died at 9:40 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 22, 2009) in Elkhart General Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 4, 1939, in Goshen to George and Virginia (Sayles) Cole. On Oct. 1, 1977, she married Thomas J. “Tom” Van Winkle in Elkhart.
He survives with one son, Rick (Melissa) Baney of Conway, Ark.; one daughter, Tammy Evans of Elkhart; three grandchildren, Taylor, Alexander and Emily Baney, all of Conway; two sisters, Nancy Harris of Elkhart and Vicki (Bobby) Briggs of Middlebury; and her niece and caregiver, Debbie Harris of Elkhart.
Sue Ann was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Phil Wilfret.
Sue Ann was a professional waitress who worked at Gropp’s Family Restaurant in Elkhart for more than 20 years. She formerly worked at Callahan’s, The Coffee Cup and Windmill, all of Elkhart, and at The Diner, which was in Goshen.
After Sue Ann retired, she worked in the sporting goods department at Walmart for four years. She attended Goshen High School and was a member of the Women of the Moose in Elkhart, but above all, Sue Ann loved to play bingo and shop at her favorite stores.
