Well-known in Cañon City for her charitable work and for running the Fremont County Credit Union before it was merged into Pueblo Bank & Trust, Mary Ann Fleming passed away from complications related to Alzheimer’s disease on Aug. 26, 2022.

Born Sept 4, 1934, in Trinidad, Colorado, to Carl “Billy” and Catherine Roberds, Mary Ann was a fourth generation Colorado native through her father, a cowboy and chuckwagon cook. Her family helped settle southeastern Colorado, living in and around the towns of Branson and Kim. Mary Ann graduated from Hoehne High School in 1952, one of a class of four people. Until her illness, she kept a home in Branson, Colorado as well as living in Cañon City. She was a member of Daughters of the Colorado Territories, an organization for women whose families settled the territory before it became a state in 1876.

She married Harvey Lee “HL” Fleming in 1954, while working as a telephone operator in Sterling.

In 1960, She and HL settled down in Cañon City. They adopted two children, Robert in 1960 and LeeAnn in 1962. HL went to work for the Department of Corrections and Mary Ann was officially a housewife, although she was immediately involved in numerous charities and later, the school district as a volunteer.

HL and Mary Ann helped found the Cañon City chapter of Meals on Wheels and remained involved with the organization for decades.

In 1979, Mary Ann took what she believed at the time would be a temporary position as manager of the Fremont County Credit Union until someone “more qualified” could be hired.

She retired about 20 years later as Director, and the credit union was acquired by Pueblo Bank and Trust. During the course of her employment there, Mary Ann worked with most of the public-employee community of the city and county, providing personally-approved loans to teachers, police officers, firefighters and others.

Mary Ann is survived by her son, Robert Fleming; daughter, LeeAnn Fleming; and grandson, Benito Gonzales. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Lee in 1999; brothers, Carl and Elwin Roberds; and close cousin, Janie Kelley. Herb Stallings, companion since 2002, passed away in 2015.
