Mary Al Summers, passed away peacefully at home on October 25, 2016 at the age of 94. She was born at Cedar Hill, North Llano River, TX on February 20, 1922. After receiving her nursing degree in San Antonio, TX, she joined the U.S. Navy as an Ensign and served her country during WWII as a Navy Nurse, where she cared for survivors of the Pacific theater.

Mary married C. Kelly Summers on May 1, 1945. Kelly was a Navy pilot, with the rank of Ensign, who flew PBMs in the South Pacific during WWII. They met one another while both were stationed at the Navy base in Corpus Christi, TX.

After discharge from the U.S. Navy, Mary worked in hospitals as a floor and emergency room nurse in; Seattle, WA, Santa Fe, NM, Buffalo, NY and Amarillo, TX, while Kelly, worked as an inspector for the Atomic Energy Commission, ERDA and DOE.

Mary worked as a nurse at Bataan Memorial Hospital and as a school nurse in Belen, and in Albuquerque at Hayes/Embudo and Grant/ Los Altos. Later she worked as a school nurse and school psychologist in Torrance, CA. Mary earned her Bachelor Degree in Nursing from the University of New Mexico and earned her Master’s Degree in Psychology from the Pepperdine University Malibu, CA.

Upon retirement at the age of 72, Mary traveled the world going to Germany, Argentina, China, Hong Kong, and Thailand. She always said yes to any outing, whether it was a dinner out or shopping at Costco. Mary was an accomplished painter and woodcarver (with Albuquerque Woodworkers Association). She also enjoyed gardening, fishing, and birdwatching.

She now follows her husband, Kelly (CK), her twelve sisters and brothers, her mother Ella and her father Quince. Mary is survived by her three sons, David K. Summers and his wife, Cheryl, Daniel A. Summers and his wife, Lindia, and Steven D. Summers, and wives, Sue (deceased) and former wife, Moira Gerety. Mary has ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
