Marvin Hagel, of Cromwell, beloved son of the late John Francis Hagel and Mollie Flatt Hagel, passed away on Tuesday, February 22nd at home from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He was born February 25, 1929, in Bronx, New York. Mollie traveled to New York to be near her mother, Rachel Flatt, for the birth of her son and then returned to Connecticut where Marvin spent the rest of his life in Middletown and Cromwell. Marvin attended high school in Middletown, where he was a varsity starter for 3 years in football, basketball, and baseball, was named Honorable Mention All-State in football, named to 1st team Central Valley Conference and Honorable Mention All State in basketball, and was invited for a tryout at Ebbet’s Field with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Marvin attended the University of Connecticut and later transferred to Wesleyan University, where he graduated in 1952 with a BA in History. In November of that year, he was drafted into Army. In 1956, Marv was hired as an English teacher at Woodrow Wilson and in 1960 started coaching there. In 1967, Marv was named the first Athletic Director at the newly opened Middlesex Community College and started 5 athletic varsity programs. Marv joined the National Junior College Athletic Association and the New England Region 21 and saw Middlesex Community College, the smallest college in New England, become the most competitive in all sports, going to the New England Regional’s 4 times. The Hagel family is very appreciative for the kind care and consideration from Donna Marie Benoit, Netta O’Connor, and members of the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame. Marvin is survived by his brother, Harry Hagel of Cromwell; two nieces, Nancy Reiman and her husband , Paul, and Lynn Talmont and her husband, Neil; two nephews, John Hagel and his wife, Debbie, and Tom Hagel; ten great-nieces and nephews; and three great-great nieces and one great-great nephew.
