Marvin G. Atz, age 81 of Freeport, IL, passed away Saturday, January 21, 2017 at the Monroe Clinic Hospital in Monroe, WI.
He was born at home on the farm in Massbach, IL on February 10, 1935 to the late George and Martha (Endress) Atz. He attended Massbach Country School through the 8th grade. As a young adult, Marvin served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 and was stationed in South Korea. He also served in the United States Army Reserve from 1958 to 1962. Marvin married Marlene Groezinger on May 21, 1961 at Christ Lutheran Church in Stockton, IL. He was a devoted husband for more than 55 years.
In Marvin’s younger years he enjoyed roller-skating, which is how he met his wife, Marlene. He was a dedicated and respected worker for 41 years at the Freeport Vault Company (Tribute Precast). He was a former member of St. John Lutheran Church in Massbach and a current member of First Lutheran Church in Freeport. He was also a member of the Aladdin Knights (as he loved to collect antique Aladdin lamps). Marvin was an overall handyman – he could fix just about anything and was regularly asked for help by his children. He loved woodworking and making pieces of furniture for his family. He also enjoyed cooking, playing euchre, and especially going to auctions and flea markets. Marvin was an adamant believer in education and insisted upon his children going to college – he was extremely proud of their accomplishments. He was an avid Cubs, Bears and NASCAR fan. Marvin could not believe he was able to witness the Chicago Cubs win the 2016 World Series. Most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Marlene Atz of Freeport; daughters, Cindy (Jeff) Cowman of Freeport and Lynda (Brian Dahlk) Atz of Madison, WI; son, Terry (Deleana) Atz of Freeport; grandchildren, Tyler Cowman, Emily Cowman, Kirsti DeHahn (fiancé Geoff Williams and daughter Hayleigh Williams), Heath Atz, Hallie Atz, Graham Atz, Paige Dahlk and Skylar Dahlk; great granddaughter, Adeline Miller; sisters, Loretta Hagen of Freeport and Virginia (Doug) Kubly of Forreston, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister.
