Marvin Dale “Marv” Somerville, 67, of Goshen, died at 10:14 a.m. Friday (Aug. 14, 2009) at his home after an extended illness.

He was born May 1, 1942, in Mishawaka to Hershel D. and Lois (Stoddard) Somerville. He married Mary Jean Newton on June 7, 1969, in Elkhart.

She survives along with three sons, Jay E. Somerville of Mesa, Ariz., Greg L. Somerville of Elkhart and Doug A. Somerville of South Bend; one brother, Dennis L. (Elaine) Somerville of Clark, S.D.; two sisters, Brenda J. (Charles “Buddy”) Niel of Thatcher, Ariz. and Diane L. (Mike) Zellmer of Black Duck, Minn.; his mother, Lois Stoddard Somerville of Elkhart; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Mr. Somerville was a 1961 graduate of Penn High School. He received an associate degree in business and supervision principles from Rio Salado Community College in Phoenix.

His lifelong trade was as a machinist and he worked at such places as Dodge Manufacturing in Mishawaka and Allied Signal, now Honeywill, in Phoenix. Upon his return to the Elkhart area in 1994, he worked several years at Americana Tire and Wheel in Elkhart as a purchasing agent until his health required an early retirement in 2005.

He was a former member of the Northside Church of the Nazarene and a current member of the White Pigeon Church of Christ, where he was an elder.

Mr. Somerville also served more than eight years on the Osolo Township Fire Department where he achieved the rank of chief of the department. During his career at Osolo, he became the township’s first paramedic and was instrumental in initiating ambulance service in Osolo Township.

He also was an avid Notre Dame fan and coached Osolo Little League. He loved to travel the western part of the country where he enjoyed the rock formations.
