Marva Joanne Reid, known to all as Joanne, was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, mother-in-law, and friend. She was born at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, MD on June 26, 1937 to the late Hannah Lavinia Moore and Charles Henry Stewart Sr.
Joanne was baptized in the Catholic Church and was a devout Christian. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima church and she never missed a week unless she was not feeling well. Even then, she would often try to attend.
Joanne was educated in the Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) system. Her early education began as a student at Germantown Elementary School, a one-room building that housed all six grades. From there, she attended Stewartown and Longview Elementary Schools and Lincoln Junior High School. In 1954, she graduated from Carver Senior High School, which is now the MCPS Board of Education building in Rockville, MD. Joanne graduated from Montgomery Junior College with an Associate’s degree in Cosmetology. She was the “queen of press and curl” to her family and friends for many years.
On June 6, 1959, she married Donald Reid who was her life-long spouse. Their union produced two children, Anthony Darnell and Donna Joan.
Joanne worked for the Montgomery County Department of Recreation for a number of years until she was hired by the Federal Government as an employee at the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in Germantown, MD, now known as the Department of Energy (DOE). She left the government in 1983 to open her own private daycare to care for her beloved granddaughter, Deanna. She felt that no one else could take care of her like she could. And she was absolutely right!
Joanne also found great joy in crocheting and took pride in sharing with others the beautiful crocheted pieces she created. These hand-made pieces included scarfs, slippers, hats, baby blankets and booties, and Christmas ornaments shaped like a bootie. People were always amazed and touched by the love and care that was evident in the beautiful work that she did. Each item was one of a kind, custom-made for the recipient… satisfaction guaranteed!
Joanne loved and cherished her family and time spent with them. People marvel at the relationship she had with her children Anthony and Donna, granddaughter, Deanna, and great-granddaughter, Nachelle. Joanne opened her heart to all who came her way. Her smile was heart-warming and contagious and will be missed by all.
In addition to her parents, Joanne was preceded in death by her brother Charles Stewart, Jr., and sisters Patricia Brown, Tina Edmunds, and Paula Turner.
Our beloved Joanne leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband, Donald Reid, son Anthony Reid (Nilda), daughter Donna Reid Bennett (Keith), granddaughter Deanna Williams, great-granddaughter Nachelle Williams; siblings Gerald Stewart, Ronald Stewart (Shirlee), Joyce Conway (Donald), Arlene Herbert (John), Terri Wooden Sommerville (Jack), Pastor Betty Spencer (David), brother-in-law Leonard Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
