Reverend Martin H. Obst, age 82, passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2011. Born in Alamo, Texas, on August 1, 1928, he was the son of Bruno Oswald Obst and Gertrude Eisen Obst. He graduated from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo, TX High School in 1945. He attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, TX taking the Pre-Theological Course and later graduated from Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa with a B. A. Degree in English. Later Martin graduated from Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa and was ordained as pastor of the American Lutheran Church on June 17, 1951. Serving churches in North Dakota, South Dakota, Beeville, TX, and Round Top, TX, he was installed as Pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Boerne in May of 1967 and served through January of 1973. While serving as pastor in Boerne, Martin was active and served in leadership positions with the Kendall County Republican Committee, was President of the Boerne Chamber of Commerce 1969-1971, and was also a member of the Kendall County Historical Committee, Berges Fest Corporation Board and received the Citizenship Award from the Boerne Lions Club in January of 1973. He later served the Salem Lutheran Church in Austin, TX. Preceded in death by his parents, son, Charles Theodore Hinesley, brother, Herman Obst, and granddaughter, Ashlee Fleming, Rev. Obst is survived by his wife, Gloria; children, James Virgil Hinesley, Edward Hinesley (Pam), Barbara Walker, Philip Joseph Hinesley (Beatrice); sister, Esther Wiese (August); brothers, Carl Obst (Sandra), Edwin Obst (Annie) and Paul Obst (Joyce); numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
