Martha Lesta Otegui graciously found peace on Sunday, July 11, 2021. She is survived by her daughter Martha Modlin and husband Andy, son Mike Otegui and wife Cindy, son-in-law Robert Lang, and grandchildren Matt, Sarah, Alex, Maya and Michael. She was preceeded in death by her loving husband of 51 years Miguel Alvarez Otegui and her daughter Monique Lang.
Born in Havana, Cuba, Martha was the only child of Maria Victoria and Armando Alonso Lesta. After attending Colegio La Luz, she began her career at the Bank of Cuba. In her early twenties she fled her native Cuba after being imprisoned for not supporting the Castro regime. After arriving in Miami alone, she was joined several months later by her mother, and would work continuously for 11 years to finally bring her father from Cuba to join them. She cared for both parents dearly in her home until their passing.
Martha married the love of her life, Miguel Alvarez Otegui in Miami in1963. She quickly assumed the joys of being a mother, military wife, and civil servant. Martha and Miguel shared a deep love and commitment to each other as well as a shared love for travel and connections to family and friends. Their trips together over the years included much of Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Panama, the US, and more. Summer vacations with her family would often take them to Miami Beach to connect with friends and family.
In the early 1970’s, Martha continued her career at the Department of the Navy in Washington, DC where she worked until her retirement in 1994. Her retirement took her back to Miami enjoying time with her family, old friends and especially her grandchildren.
Martha’s warm and vivacious personality was contagious to everyone she met. Her greatest joy in life was celebrating with her husband, mother, children and grandchildren. We will miss her dearly.
Special thanks to the staff at The Palace Kendall and Opus Care for their compassionate care in her final years.
