Martha Mildred Bilby Townsend, 95, Anderson, died August 3, 2005 at Miller’s Senior Living Community – Castleton, Indiana after an brief illness. She was born August 29, 1909 in Anderson and was raised in Pendleton. She was a graduate of Pendleton High School as Valedictorian in 1927. She was a reporter for the Anderson Herald Newspaper in the early 1930’s and worked 20 yrs in the accounting office of Sears, retiring in 1971. She was a member of Whetstone United Church of Christ, Whetstone Senior Citizens and former member of Home Economics Club, Mother’s Club, Bridge Club, and Sears Retirees. She was a greeter at chapel and a floor counselor at the Isabel Harter House. She was recognized by the Mayor of Anderson for her outstanding service to the community on August 28, 1998 at her 79th birthday party.
She is survived by her two children, James Darrell Townsend and wife, Ann of Indianpolis, and Janet Elaine Wojna and husband, Ed of Plymouth, Michigan, Four grandchildren, Steve and Mary Ann Townsend of Northville, Michigan, Jeff and wife, Debbie Townsend of Fishers, Indiana, Sharon and Brett Taylor of Indianpolis, Sara and Scott Curson of Woodstock, Georgia, eleven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a sister, Irene Sharp of Mesa, Arizona.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Jim Townsend, parents, Floyd & Esther Simmonds Bilby of Phoenix, sisters, Irma Atkerson of Phoenix, and Bernadine Mingle of Pendleton, and a brother, Floyd Bilby, Jr, of Phoenix, AZ.
