June 6, 1922 – April 23, 2009

Martha Lee Peden, age 86, a loving mother who cared deeply for her children and grandchildren, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2009. Born in Union, SC, on June 6, 1922, she was the daughter of Clarence Landrum Parker and Mary Millwood Parker. After graduating from Coker College, she worked as a stenographer in the Savannah, Georgia office of the FBI. She met Special Agent Jack Peden; they were married for 54 years, becoming one of the many couples who routinely ignored J. Edgar Hoover”s standing order that agents and bureau staff not date each other. Martha was a dedicated elementary school teacher for 25 years. After retirement she developed a love for golf; the result being she won the Nine Hole Club Championship at Fair Oaks Ranch Country Club for three years. Her other passions were reading, playing bridge with her dear friends and gardening. Preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband, Jack Bill Peden, and brother, Hames Earl Parker, she is survived by daughter, Cheryl Roper Smith and husband, Don; sons, Robert R. Peden and wife, Stephanie, Michael Parker Peden and wife Kathy; grandchildren, Bo Roper, Jenna Roper Slavinskas and husband, Vladys, Brandon Peden, Melissa Elrod and husband, Scott, Samantha Knecht and husband, Jason, and Scott Peden; great grandchildren, Jackson Elrod, Jon, Emily, and Luk Slavinskas, Jackson Roper, and her precious Maltese companion, Sadie. Mom received superb care and support from all the staff at St. Luke”s Baptist Hospital, and we thank them. The family also wants to pay special tribute to the 40 years of love and care provided to mother by a very special physician, Dr. Jim McCoy.
