Miss Martha Jean Ennis of West Point, Georgia passed away of natural causes at George Lanier Memorial Hospital on August 4, 2014. She was 88 years old, having just celebrated her birthday a few days earlier. She never married or had children but was always a favorite with the children of her immediate family. Pets, especially small dogs, were her constant companions.

Jean Ennis, as she was known, was born to Marion Lee “Pop” Ennis and Annie Farrar “Mom” [Rearden] Ennis on July 27, 1926 in West Point, Georgia, the younger of two children. She was raised in West Point and Lanett and graduated from Lanett High School. She then attained her BA from Auburn University in 1950 and later obtained a Master’s Degree from Michigan State University in 1976.

Miss Ennis worked for much of her long life as an elementary Physical Education teacher for the United States Department of Defense and taught school for many years in England and France. She traveled extensively throughout England, continental Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. She lived for many years in Chipping Norton, England.

After retiring from her teaching position abroad, Miss Ennis returned to West Point and built a lovely Victorian-style home of which she was very proud.

Miss Ennis is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Col. Arthur L. Ennis, MD (ret.) and Helen H. Ennis of Gadsden, Alabama, her nephew William Ennis and his wife Constance Livsey of Anchorage, Alaska; her niece Deborah Doineau, Ed.D. and her husband Philippe Doineau of Nashville, Tennessee; and her nephew David Ennis, MD and his wife Elizabeth Ennis, MD of Mountain Brook, Alabama.
