Martha Jane Bacon, 81, of Palatka, passed from this life on Sunday, August 1, 2021, at Putnam Community Medical Center following an extended illness. Born and raised in Smyrna, Georgia, she was a 1957 graduate of Campbell High School in Smyrna. Jane had resided in Palatka from 1974-78 and returned to Palatka in 1981 from Brandon, Mississippi. She had worked as a bookkeeper for her family business, Tatum Lumber Company in Smyrna.

Upon moving to Putnam County, Jane continued as a bookkeeper working with numerous businesses including Rose Trucking Brokers in Hastings, Middleton Harvesters in Elkton, Snap-On Tools, and City Shippers. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Palatka. Outside of work, Jane enjoyed fishing with her husband Fred and cherished the time spent with her family and close friends every week playing games and grilling out.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Fred Bacon, her parents, Marion H. Tatum and Bessie Hughes Tatum, and 2 brothers, Gene Tatum and Harold “Bill” Tatum.

Jane is survived by 2 sons, Greg Bacon (Debbie) and Gary Bacon (KanDee), a daughter, Sherri Johnson (Cary), all of Palatka, 6 grandchildren, Alan Bacon (Bobbi), Austin Bacon (Lexy), Lauren Bacon, Scott Bacon, Cole Johnson, and Tucker Johnson, 2 great-grandchildren, Gunnar Bacon and Graham Bacon and expecting another great-grandchild in January. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Cile Tatum of Charlotte, NC, as well as several nieces and nephews.
