If it was possible for Martha Houston Avery to transcend the space between heaven and earth, she might quote the verse of John 14:27, “Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” Martha Houston Avery lived a simple life in which she served her family, her God and her community with great tenderness and efficiency. At first thought, that might draw one to think of someone who kept a stopwatch on her comings and goings. Martha Avery’s life was tempered not so much by the clock as it was by a gentle spirit that knew that much could be accomplished by careful planning and patience. For all the years she worked with the Pike family in their trucking business, she was a crucial part of the system where time was of the essence. She worked for Pike Transfer Company in an office where most of the others were men, but they knew and respected her for her diligence and dedication to the company. Even after the owners passed on, she continued as a trusted advisor to that family. Martha was a devoted member of Raymond Baptist Church. Her concern for her community expressed itself in her service through the Turin chapter, The Order of the Eastern Star. In the years following her retirement, Martha found that her servant’s heart could be put to good use as a caregiver for families who were faced with their desire to keep their aging loved ones in their own homes. It was a perfect fit for all involved as Martha broadened her extended family to include these new people in her life. Born in 1934, she was the daughter of the late William Howard and Martha Ruth Beavers Houston. Martha is survived by her daughter, Donna Avery Andrews and her husband Michael, and her son, Howard Avery and his fiancée Tammy Billitteri. Her grandchildren are Dean Avery and his fiancée Christine Klugh; Kyle Avery and his girlfriend Alex Sartor. Her great-granddaughter is Bailey Avery. She is also survived by her dear aunt Mrs. Ann Houston and an extended family of cousins in South Georgia, Florida and the Atlanta area. Out of respect for the health of others, Martha’s life of service and devotion will be remembered at a private family service. A more public gathering will be planned at a later date. Interment will be in Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who may wish to do so might consider a gift in Martha’s name to either Raymond Baptist Church or Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church. Martha’s family expresses thanks to Southern Grace Hospice and Hope Center Memory Care for their love and compassion in caring for her.
