September 9, 1919 – January 23, 2011Martha was born to Samuel and Alberta (Birdie) Ammons in Wallis, Texas. She was the fourth of six children. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Lessie Mae Dave and Leona Nere Williams. She married Berry Branch in 1942 and together they had two children – Berrilyn Joyce Branch and Ronald Leroy Branch.Martha graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in Houston in 1936 and became entrenched in the Houston Third Ward area, where she lived until April 2001 when she moved in with her son, Ronald, and his wife, Zelma. Before her health declined, Martha was involved in many church and social activities at Trinity United Methodist Church, Liberty Baptist Church, University Presbyterian Church, and Westbury United Methodist Church One of her fondest accomplishments was as Girl Scout Leader. Renowned in the Houston area San Jacinto Girl Scouts organization, she was the first African American scout leader to take her Girl Scout troop members on excursions out of the United States. Her troops traveled to Mexico in 1958, 1961 and 1963. She enriched the lives of many young women through scouting. Some 17 of them traveled from various locations around the country to celebrate her 89th birthday.She is survived by her daughter, Berrilyn, her son Ronald (Zelma), a sister, Odes Ladson, and two brothers, Benjamin Ammons (Marjorie) and Rev. Samuel Ammons. She also leaves to remember her legacy: Grandchildren – Adrian Doyle Branch (Rose) and Andre Duane Branch. Great grandchildren – Briannah Janae Branch, twins Brendan and Quinlan Branch, and Chloe Rose Branch. Nieces – Patsy Collins, Geri Crowder, Edwina Putney, Kay Williams, Joann Matthews, Willa Williams and many more grand nieces. Nephews – Charles Ammons, Clifton Ammons, Benjamin Ammons and many more grand nephews.
