Marlene Stenzel, age 84, of Burt, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2016 at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. Delores Marlene Dremmel, the daughter of Ray and Ethel (Sperry) Dremmel, was born on February 24, 1932 in Burt, Iowa. She graduated from Burt High School in 1949. Marlene received her teacher’s certificate from the University of Dubuque in 1951 and her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Drake University 1970. On August 3, 1956 Marlene was united in marriage with Leonard Stenzel at the Burt Presbyterian Church. After their marriage their early life consisted of farming in the Burt area during which their children Dawn and Joel were born. When they started school she went back to teaching for the next 34 years, retiring in 1993. Music was an important part of her life. She faithfully served in the music department for over 50 years at the Burt Presbyterian Church. She particularly enjoyed providing organ music for the church. She was a long time member of the Burt Women’s Club, Women’s Circle Groups and PWC organizations. Marlene was active visiting friends, family and new places, but served her church and community. She also loved quilting and reading books from the Burt Library. Left to cherish Marlene’s memory is her husband of 60 years, Leonard; a daughter, Dawn Soderberg and her husband Chuck of Ankeny; a son, Joel Stenzel of Tulsa, OK; five grandchildren, Adam Rogge, Alisha (Brian) Lee, Maria (James) Thompson, Ian (Krysta) Stenzel and Alec Stenzel; six great grandchildren; and three sisters, Charlotte Baldwin of Spirit Lake, Barbara (Duane) Dittmer of Burt and Marsha Cerizo of Omaha. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Don Dremmel; a sister-in-law Corinne; and two brothers-in-law, Bert Baldwin and Jack Cerizo.
