Marlene Joan Smothers passed away on September 3, 2022. She was born on January 4, 1940 on a farm near Palmer, Iowa to John M. Junkman and Leora A. (Knierim) Junkman.
Marlene attended Manson High School and thereafter received her license from cosmetology school where she then maintained her own salon for 12 years. She married Michael C. Johnson on November 15, 1957, and together raised four children. She married Dennis J. Smothers on August 16, 1976 and they had a son together. Years later she moved to California where she transitioned into property management for 30 years. Retiring in May of 2012, she returned to Iowa to enjoy her children and grandchildren. Marlene loved cooking, crafting, and playing cards. Volunteering at the Elks Club in Altoona, she had many friends and neighbor friends in her Altoona community.
Marlene is survived by her children: Tony Johnson (Shelly Whalen) of Fort Dodge and grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer and Austin. Tammy & Dan Proffitt of Unionville, IA and grandchildren, Ashlee, Kourtney and Noah. Todd & Kristine Johnson of Tempe, AZ and grandchildren, Stephan & Matthew. Troy Johnson (Karalee Wilson) of Murray, IA and grandchild, Cory. Richard & Tina Smothers of Waukee, IA and grandchildren, Xyola, McCoy and Maverick. She is also survived by her brother, James & Pam Junkman of Palmira, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Leora Junkman and brothers, Harold, Darvin, Leroy, Norman and Kenneth.
She was very proud of her family; 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, and loved them very much.
