Mark Marusich, former band director for Saguaro High school in Scottsdale, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 after a progressive illness. Born in 1959, he became a second generation Arizona Native. Mark grew up in Scottsdale, attending the now gone but often remembered Scottsdale High School. It is here he planted strong roots and friendships in all areas of the fine arts department, spending his final year there as Senior class President. He attended Arizona State University, his father’s Alma Mater, receiving a degree in music in 1981 before starting his career. It was in Tucson at Sunnyside High School he spent three years expanding the music program. While there he earned his Masters degree at the University of Arizona. He took the opportunity to return to Scottsdale where he assumed the role of Band Director at Saguaro High School. His eight years in this role were undoubtedly some of the happiest, most rewarding years of his career. Throughout his life, Mark played music wherever he could. He became a member of several varied musical groups ranging from Classical, to Blue Grass, to the music of his family heritage. Mark is proceeded by his wife, Dr. Jodey Marusich. He is survived by his daughters Kirsten Marusich and Courtney Marusich, son-in-law Alvaro Cardenas, Kirsten’s fiancé© Matthew Fassl, and his most beloved granddaughter Sela Cardenas. He is also survived by his mother Natalie, his sister Stephanie, brother Paul and his wife Allison and their two son’s Dylan and Logan.
